A modern DRM solution designed for libraries
1 April - 31 May 2026
An update to the management of EBSCO eBooks is scheduled for April 2026. To provide a simpler and more accessible download experience, in line with international industry standards, EBSCO eBooks will adopt Readium Licensed Content Protection (LCP) technology as their new Digital Rights Management (DRM) system. Thorium Reader is the recommended reading app and is compatible with LCP DRM.
What’s changing?
- DRM technology: LCP will replace Adobe DRM for full downloads of EBSCO eBooks.
- Reading application: for DRM-protected downloads on computers, we recommend using Thorium Reader, an LCP-compatible application.
Why is this an improvement for libraries and users?
- Simpler process: An Adobe ID account will no longer be required.
- Built-in accessibility: Thorium Reader complies with WCAG 2.2 AA and includes features such as text-to-speech, font and contrast adjustment, annotations and bookmarks.
- Modern, international standard: LCP is a solution based on internationally recognised standards, supported by the non-profit consortium EDRLab.
- Greater compatibility: it allows you to open LCP-protected EPUB and PDF files, as well as DRM-free content, from the same application.
