As well as the phenomenon of double dipping that can occur with publishing in hybrid journals, when publishers receive the APC payment for publishing an open access article, and at the same time may receive a second payment in the form of a subscription to the journal in which the article has been published, it is also important to pay attention to the following aspects:
- maintaining the author's copyright, avoiding the transfer of these rights to the publisher, and instead making use of open licences;
- the transparency of contractual costs, avoiding non-disclosure clauses that prevent the economic terms offered by publishers from being made public, and therefore comparable;
- the accessibility of research content being limited exclusively to subscribers, which should instead be extended freely to the public.
