The volume collects together all the materials produced for the University Library System project Stories of books and palaces: tours of the Unife libraries. Through texts and over 400 images, it tells the story and describes the peculiarities of the libraries, the ancient and valuable book collections they preserve, and the historical and architectural heritage of the University of Ferrara, to preserve and pass on the memory of important places in the city.

Alongside Teaching and Research, Italian universities are also committed to Public Engagement activities featuring teaching and cultural initiatives for a non-academic audience. At the University of Ferrara, this commitment was translated into an exhibition in April 2019, originating from a virtuous union of cultural heritage and teaching activities. The creation of the “Natura Naturata” exhibition involved the synthesis of taught courses and research by the University of Ferrara's Industrial Product Design students together with their teachers, in collaboration with librarians. In the Product Design 2 Workshop, students develop exhibition projects, starting from the curatorial concept, through the construction, up to the graphic-communicative aspects and the creation of information and teaching tools. The exhibition was created based on the study of rules used to properly protect library assets so that students could gain specific skills for the preparation of bibliographic exhibitions. It took shape in the Chemistry and Life Sciences Library Santa Maria delle Grazie to emphasize the importance of the University's tangible and intangible cultural heritage with the intention of conveying the 'world' of library collections – and also the University's historical and architectural heritage - to students, scholars, and citizens.

Starting in 2019, the Ferrara EDC was tasked by the Italian Network of European Documentation Centres to develop the project for the National EDC newsletter and coordinate its publication. Thanks to her experience gained on the Unife EDC Newsletter (2014-2019), Dr. Sophia Salmaso was asked to take responsibility for the project, and she still leads the production of the newsletter, which is distributed throughout the national territory, in collaboration with her colleagues in the working group from other organisations (CNR Rome, LUMSA University, etc.).

The publication brings together the proceedings of the Round Table organised by the Unife Library System in the context of the Restoration-Museums Fair 2021. The exploration process began from the illustration of three case studies: the treatment of valuable collections in the Unife libraries and their publicising, the protection and promotion of archival collections in the Emilia-Romagna context (especially through the ArchIVI - City of Archives web portal) and the Royal Library of Turin, included in the BiblioTour Piemonte "bibliotourism" tour.

The brochure illustrates the activities to protect and promote ancient library collections and the strategies for the promotion of culture adopted by the University Library System from 2006 to 2016.
