Unife has signed the 2023-2027 transformative agreement signed by CRUI's Electronic Resources Area with the publisher Elsevier.

Science Direct Online: read & publish

For the entire duration of the contract, Unife researchers will also be able to publish with open access in over 1,800 Elsevier Hybrid journals. Information for submitting a contribution to the Elsevier website.
A pilot project for the years 2023 and 2024 also allows Unife researchers to publish with open access in over 600 of the publisher's Gold journals. As of 31 May 2024, funding for this pilot project has been exhausted, so researchers wishing to publish in Gold journals will have to use their own research funds

When publishing with Open Access, the APC (Article Processing Charge) is ascribed to the contract participation cost paid by the university.

CRUI and funds for Open Access publication

CRUI has not provided for a pre-established allocation of funds for OA publication in hybrid journals among the institutions participating in the contract, and the number of OA publications is limited in the first two years, but unlimited for the following three years.

For OA publication in Gold journals, a dedicated fund has been established from which the costs for the articles published will be taken; at the end of the pilot project, the publisher and CRUI will assess whether to continue with this system or not.

Articles suitable for Open Access publication

The articles considered to be suitable for OA publication are Original Papers, Review Papers, Case Reports.

From the 1st January 2025, coinciding with the change to unlimited publication for Hybrid titles, suitable articles will also include Short Communications.

Contractual clauses and licences for OA publication

It is possible to consult the clauses for OA publication with this publisher in the journals included in the contract, considering that the predefined licence will be CC BY 4.0, but that it will also be possible to publish under licence CC BY NC ND 4.0: however, the choice of this second licence entails the transfer of marketing rights to the publisher, so its use is not recommended .

Recovery of 2023 Open Access publication expenses

A procedure is planned to retroactively recover the expenses from articles published in eligible Hybrid and Gold journals from 1st January 2023: for articles published with OA in contract journals, a refund of the amounts paid for APCs will be provided to authors.
