Since 2008, the University Library System has launched numerous initiatives for the conservation of the special collections it owns: these involve both ordinary maintenance activities, which are necessary to guarantee the best conditions for the conservation of the pieces, and extraordinary projects, such as restorations.
These interventions are always carried out under the guidance of the relevant regional authority for such matters of protection, and the budget is generally provided by the University of Ferrara itself.
The activities for the conservation of this heritage carried out by the Library System are virtuously integrated with activities for its promotion: indeed, the latter activities allow the library to spread knowledge about the heritage while raising the public's awareness of how it is preserved.
